Biography: The Shack Band

The Shack Band is a classic rock influenced, jam band/roots rock music group from Blacksburg, Virginia. Officially, they have been playing together since August 2007, but have roots dating back years earlier. In their freshman year at Virginia Tech, drummer Terrence Dolan, bassist Mason Owen, and guitarist Jonathan DiSalle lived in the same dorm and they began playing together on a regular basis.
The following year, the trio hooked up with guitarist Daniel Schutt, who was already an accomplished songwriter and solo artist on the local music scene. Terrence, Mason, Jonathan, and Daniel began playing music together in their apartment and something special started to take shape. In the fall of 2007, Mason moved into a one-bedroom, run down historic Blacksburg landmark known as “The Shack.” After packing it with music equipment, the Shack Band was born. Not long after, keyboardist Andrew Gillespie was invited to sit in with the group and was soon a full time member.
After several months the band had compiled an impressive repertoire of covers and originals as they took the stage for the first time in the spring of 2008. Since then, they have added the talents of Hunter McWaters on percussion and have created a buzz on the local music scene from playing primarily fraternity parties and local bars. In May 2008, the Shack Band hit the studio for the first time in Charlotte, NC to record their first EP. The following year, the group recorded another eight-song demo in Richmond, Virginia.
The Shack Band has developed a major presence on the Blacksburg music scene that has spread to other universities and colleges throughout Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Generating a faithful fan base of Shack Heads, The Shack Band was also named the “Best Local Band” of 2008 by Virginia Tech’s school newspaper, the Collegiate Times. The following summer, the group was given the opportunity to play The National Theater, one of the premiere concert venues in Richmond, Virginia. The current lineup consists of the core founding members plus some new faces that we are both honored and proud to call our own. The guys thank anyone and everyone who has contributed in any way, either directly or by simply listening or catching a show. In the coming months, there will be many more songs, shows, and memorable nights….we’ll see ya’ll there.
