Biography: The 80s Academy

Time-traveling visitors from an impossibly advanced past, The 80s Academy have arrived in the present to introduce a post-millennial generation to the futuristic technology and music in a new wave of days gone back. They’re bringing back the 1980s, one one-hit wonder at a time.

Brothers Mike and Paul Czech love the decade. It’s when they grew up, and when they started playing with each other in Canton, Ohio. The band’s music started as a hodgepodge of decades, but the Czech's quickly refined their playlist to a razor’s edge, focusing on the New Wave bands of the late seventies and 1980s.

“There are good memories attached to the 80s,” Mike said. “Paul and I are from the 80s. We think of our high school years, MTV, and growing up.”
“New Wave music seems to be a perfect blend of imaginative and exploratory songwriting with commercial sensibilities,” Paul said.

The 80s Academy's shows quickly turn into big parties. With Mike (his name, pronounced “Mike Check,” is the perfect calling card for a singer) calling the shots from the stage, crowds jump, dance, swing, sway and sing
along to 80s hits from Devo to Corey Hart, Cyndi Lauper to Prince.

“Sometimes people dance on the bar and tables, and get worked up into a frenzy when we’re rocking out,” Paul said. “I think the craziness is the energy we get from people jumping around. We play off that energy, and it drives us to be more energetic. This music lends itself to that kind of vibe,” Mike said.

The strong bond between the Czech brothers (yes, they’re two wild and crazy guys) makes their performances tight, compelling and note-perfect. “We grew up playing punk music, so we have that punk ethos – that eighth-note vibe where we lock in together,” Mike said. “We learned to play our instruments together.”
Working and traveling all over the country came together when the Czechs found themselves living and working in Statesboro, Georgia at the same time – Mike teaching a rock-and-roll history class for Georgia Southern University, and Paul working in the marketing department of the college. The two hadn’t played together in five years before starting Moving in Stereo in early 2009. The old magic came back instantly.
