Biography: Steep Canyon Rangers
THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS started when the group met while attending the University of North Carolina. As a result the band is comprised of musicians from every region of state. Two members of the band are from the mountains of western North Carolina. From Brevard is Woody Platt on guitar and lead vocals and Mike Guggino on the mandolin and vocals. Graham Sharp plays the banjo, sings, and is originally from Greensboro, NC. Bassist and vocalist Charles Humphrey III hails from Greenville, NC.
THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS have captured a uniquely diverse audience and have always had the ability to perform at a wide variety of venues. This broad appeal allows them to open for Doc Watson in front of a sit down crowd at The Carolina Theatre one week and headline a Friday night performance in front of 500 dancing fans at The Boulder Theater in Colorado the next.
With approximately 125 concerts annually, the band’s success is a direct result of their energetic live performance. With perfect renditions of bluegrass traditionals carefully woven into their huge selection of stunning original material these young masters bring knowledge, respect, and renewed energy to the art form rarely seen in a band of this age.
TTHE STEEP CANYON RANGERS are in full festival mode leading up to the recording of their third CD this fall. But before they settle into the studio this October they have set out on an ambitious tour that sees them playing no less than 50 dates in the roughly 100 days leading up to this year’s IBMA Convention in Louisville, KY.
With the timing, sensibility and proficiency of a band well beyond their years, THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS deliver bluegrass music with the purity and power with which it was meant to be played. As a compliment to their instrumental tenacity, the young and energetic STEEP CANYON RANGERS deliver sweet and destinctive vocal stylings to complement the many original songs that have become their trademark.
