Biography: Old Habits
OLD HABITS is a traditional bluegrass band hailing from Raleigh, NC (& the surrounding area). The band's origins go back to when brothers Craig & Bennett Thompson started picking with Lin Peterson in early 2002. After pursuing newgrass for a while (in the original Old Habits) the 3 got together in April 2003 with Brian English for a garage picking session at the Groveland Estate near NCSU. Several fiddle tunes later the OLD HABITS sound was complete. The members have similar interests in playing traditional and progressive bluegrass, drawing influences from Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Del McCoury, Sam Bush and Tim O'Brien. OLD HABITS has quickly developed a classic sound, fueled by powerful harmonies and strong instrumentals. Expect a fun show filled with a mix of original material and traditional bluegrass songs.
Craig Thompson, on the bass, has been a musician for most of his life, playing drums in several rock bands. Bluegrass bass was a natural transition and allows him to focus on vocals and still carry the rhythm section of the band. Craig also contributes original material to the line-up.
Brian English, featured on fiddle and guitar, is an experienced musician, having played with the former Triangle favorite, Jackson Road. Brian has been playing violin since the age of seven, and plays both classical violin and bluegrass fiddle. Brian’s deep bass vocal adds to the characteristic four part harmony of many of the band’s songs, and his impeccable fiddle playing is a tremendous asset to the group.
Bennett Thompson, featured on guitar and mandolin, has played in several bands over the past ten years. He has played guitar for fifteen years, and began to play mandolin two years ago, developing an interest in bluegrass and traditional music. Bennett also contributes original material to the band, and adds to the sound with the mandolin, which ranges from powerful rhythm to graceful melodies, and the rhythm and flat-picked guitar.
Lin Peterson, featured on guitar, banjo, and more recently, Dobro, has played in many bands, but found his calling in bluegrass and traditional music. He fills out the three part harmony which is such an integral part of the OLD HABITS sound and has also penned several of the band’s original tunes.
