Kicking Dust with MAHALA: It's not often you see people dancing and "kicking dust," but listening to the music of MAHALA will leave you jiving and doing just that.
Township Jive is music which originated from the townships around Johannesburg, South Africa. This sound came about from different styles of Southern African music. Migrant workers from rural parts of this region came to work in the mines and factories surrounding the Golden City of Johannesburg and with them came their traditional music and culture. When these music cultures were fused with pop music of the urban areas, a style of dance and popular rhythms emerged and this music has now reached places far away from the dusty streets of Soweto. Township Jive is no different from any pop music for the masses and grooves hard as proven by Mahlathini and the Mahottela Queens, and Paul Simon's Graceland and, Johnny Clegg and Juluka.
MAHALA is part of this music and other influences have been added to the happy sounds of Township Jive. Different styles of music like Kwela, Marabi, Mbaqanga, the 6/8 rhythms from the north of the Limpopo and the nomads chants, can be easily detected in the MAHALA sound making it very unique. Music has no color, no religion, no political affiliation, no sex or age, it reaches out to everybody and also brings musicians, dancers and singers from different backgrounds together. MAHALA also evolved from the same principles and with one thing in mind - to introduce good music to good people.
Now that African musicians have found a place in the global music scene, different styles of African music are being heard in clubs, colleges, and outdoor festivals all over the U.S.A. MAHALA is one of the groups which is reaching out to audiences which have never experienced Township Jive. MAHALA has succeeded by planning, deciding, approving, and setting the standards of its style of music. The band has crossed over in the true sense of the word. MAHALA's audiences comprise people of all races, ages, and its sound fits the club or outdoor festivals.
