Biography: Last Train Home
Over its eight-year existence, LAST TRAIN HOME has evolved from a five-piece part-time band in Washington D.C. to what critic Peter Cooper of the Nashville Tennessean calls "one of the country's most formidable roots-rock bands." And while roots-rock is the core of Last Train Home's sound, don't overlook the country, swing, bluegrass, folk, mariachi, pop, punk, and Tin Pan Alley influences you'll find if you give this band a listen.
Named Washington D.C.'s "Artist of the Year" in 2003, LAST TRAIN HOME became a full-time touring band the same year. Its front man is singer-songwriter Eric Brace, on leave from The Washington Post (where he covered the local music scene) in order to give his musical dreams a chance. He's played in several Washington area bands, including B-Time, the Beggars, Kevin Johnson & the Linemen. He ran a local rock record label, Top Records, for many years, before focusing on his own music. With Last Train Home, Brace writes the bulk of the material, with the rest coming from band member/songwriters Scott McKnight, Bill Williams, and Alan Brace (Eric's brother), as well as such artists as Buck Owens and Barry White. Bassist Jim Gray and drummer Martin Lynds, who have become a much-in-demand rhythm section since their move to Nashville two years ago, always join Brace. Other band members include trumpeter/fiddler Kevin Cordt, pedal steel players Dave Van Allen, Pete Finney, and Rich Gilbert, guitarist Tom Mason, and saxophonist/accordionist Chris Watling. Also on board is guitarist Jared Bartlett, who also produced the band's most recent recording, "Bound Away."
LAST TRAIN HOME has played more than a thousand shows over the years, including tours of Australia, Germany, Switzerland, and the Virgin Islands, and has appeared on the CBS “Late Late Show w/ Craig Ferguson” and on the acclaimed syndicated public radio show "Mountain Stage."
With four full-length recordings under its belt, along with a Christmas EP and another collection of cover tunes, LAST TRAIN HOME is a prolific band that gets better with each passing release. With no signs of slowing down, LAST TRAIN HOME is one of the most interesting bands on the landscape of American music. Its latest CD, "Bound Away," has gotten nothing but raves, giving the band more opportunities than ever to tour the country and get exposed to ever-wider audiences.
