Biography: The Geckos
This steel drum, upright bass and drum kit/percussion ensemble brings the sounds of the Caribbean to life. The Geckos provide the perfect background music for cocktail receptions, events and parties. The warmth of the bass blends with the bright steel drums while the percussion brings the room to life with just enough volume to allow for conversation. Song selections cross geographic and generation lines. They perform songs from the Caribbean as well as American selections from the 1930’s to today. A set of music might drift from “Sly Mongoose” (Trinidad) and “No Woman No Cry” (Jamaica) to “Georgia on My Mind”, “The Summer Wind” and “The Tide is High” (USA). Because this ensemble can perform acoustically, they are permitted to play in many of the areas historic mansions, inns and restaurants where amplified live music is not allowed. The Geckos are always happy to tell guests the history of steel drums and show the instruments that they built themselves.
The Geckos give an elegant performance of caribbean and stateside selections. Depending on the needs of your event, Caribbean Cocktail is assembled using several of the following instruments: Tenor Steel Drum, Standup Bass, Steel Drum Bass, Guitar, Alto steel drums, Cello steel drums and drum kit. Songs can be performed with vocals or instrumentally. The mixture between stand up bass and steel pans brings out the best in both instruments. The group can play acoustically or amplified depending on the size of the room. The repertoire ranges from Caribbean standards to New Orleans grooves. The Geckos play the music of groups like The Talbot Brothers of Bermuda, Louis Armstrong, Dr. John, Cat Stevens, Jerry Garcia, Peter Tosh, Van Morrison, Bob Marley, Toots and the Maytals as well as selections of their own original music.
