The CHARLOTTESVILLE SWING ORCHESTRA has been performing jazz, swing and latin-based music at the highest level for close to twenty years. Directed by acclaimed jazz trumpeter and arranger John D'earth, and featuring stunning vocals by Dawn Thompson, the Swing Orchestra is known for its elegance, excitement and authenticity. Superb musicianship and seasoned professionalism make the CSO a great band for people who know and love good music, especially jazz, swing and the American Songbook (Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, etc.). Whether the mood is quiet and romantic, or exploding with dance energy, the CHARLOTTESVILLE SWING ORHCESTRA invites comparison with the best of acoustic jazz from any era.
Most members of the group have toured and recorded nationally and internationally. D'earth has performed and/or recorded with Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Tito Puente, Bruce Hornsby, Quincy Jones/Miles Davis (Live at Montreaux) and the Dave Matthews Band, among many others. He has appeared on over fifty CDs and has released six recordings under his own leadership. He was included in the Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz (Oxford Press) and he directs the Jazz Performance Program at the University of Virginia. His wife, Dawn Thompson, has been singing with the CSO and co-leading the band since its inception. She has performed her own songs with numerous artists including guitarists Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and John Abercrombie. She has recorded with Dave Matthews and other members of DMB. Together, John and Dawn have turned the CHARLOTTESVILLE SWING ORCHESTRA into a beacon for music lovers and musicians alike; a rare synthesis of professionalism and artistic excellence.
The CHARLOTTESVILLE SWING ORCHESTRA offers flexible combinations of musicians and time-frames. Groups of different sizes are available up to their full, eight piece band.
