Biography: Jeff Fairbanks Jazz Orchestra

Truly one of a kind, the Jeff Fairbanks Jazz Orchestra wows audiences to a fusion of Jazz and Asian folk music, with an original repertoire written by award-winning composer Jeff Fairbanks. This exciting new sound is inspired by and relevant to our increasingly mutlicultural society. Frequently the core 17-piece big band is augmented by players of traditional Asian instruments like gongs, drums, and the zither, adding a visual as well as a distinctive aural effect. The experience of a live JFJO performance is well suited for both entertaining and listening situations.
Of course, the big band is made of some of the top Jazz musicians to be found in New York City. Apart from the JFJO, the individual band members maintain busy schedules performing with such groups as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, in numerous Broadway shows, in Jazz clubs, and international touring. The Asian folk instrument performers are innovators at the top of their fields, also performing regularly and touring. The fact that these band members are chosen from New York's freshest generation of forward-thinking musicians further reinforces the music's relevance to today's world.
Creating and tying the Asian-Jazz concept together is imaginative, acclaimed composer Jeff Fairbanks. A recognized talent, Mr. Fairbanks has won a handful of awards including the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award, the BMI Charlie Parker Composition Prize, and multiple grants from both the American Music Center and the Queens Council on the Arts. Jeff earned an M.M. in Jazz Composition and a B.M. in Performance at the Unversity of South Florida. After college he was accepted into the BMI Jazz Composer's Workshop, honing his craft under Jim McNeely and Mike Holober.
As a freelance trombonist, Jeff has had the privilege to perform in Europe, Asia, Latin America and throughout the U.S. In New York, he performs in various groups, playing a full gamut of both musical styles and venues. He toured Japan and the U.S. in the Glenn Miller Orchestra, appeared with the Tommy Dorsey and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestras, and was a trombonist for Carnival Cruise Lines and Busch Gardens.
